Golden Grass Woven Baskets

The beautiful capim dourado or 'golden grass' used in our Brazilian woven grass basket collections can be found growing in the Tocantins region of Brazil, where our artist partner, Zilda, lives. It is a protected resource, and its raw grasses cannot be exported. Only the finished grass products of the indigenous peoples of Brazil can be brought into your home--making these items unique and valuable. The indigenous people of Brazil have been crafting woven goods from this unique grass for many years. It is durable, flexible and lightweight, making it perfect for jewelry and basket making.  Pick up your unique, fair trade, hand-woven basket today!

The Artist's Story: Zilda

In Mumbuca, Brazil, Zilda (the oldest member pictured here) is patiently weaving. Several years ago Zilda’s eldest daughter and son-in-law died suddenly. This tragedy lead Zilda to adopt her daughter’s four children. She is pictured here with two of her grandchildren and Beloniza, her daughter. Zilda's work with Cross Trade has helped keep her family together. Without this income, Zilda would have trouble providing for her now larger family.
